Volkswagen scraps plans for a second battery factory in Lower Saxony
According to a media report, Volkswagen currently sees no chance of realising a second battery cell factory in Lower Saxony, Germany. Lower Saxony’s Minister President Stephan Weil spoke out in favour of a second cell factory in Emden – but was outvoted in the supervisory board because of the costs involved.

Ford secures lithium for future electric cars
Ford is procuring lithium on a large scale for the batteries for its electric cars. The carmaker now signed agreements with five companies. Depending on the supplier, the first battery-grade materials will be delivered to the carmaker between 2025 and 2026.

Panasonic to quadruple its battery production

Germany: Northvolt makes progress on cell plant in Heide
Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt is making progress in setting up a factory in Germany. The communities of Lohe-Rickelshof and Norderwöhrden have agreed to enter the next phase of the approval process. In addition, Northvolt is seeking what is known as TCTF funding.

Honda and GS Yuasa form JV for battery development
Honda and GS Yuasa have agreed to establish a joint venture for battery development. The new company, called Honda GS Yuasa EV Battery R&D, will launch at the end of 2023. Both companies will hold a 50/50 stake in the company and are already planning a battery factory in Japan.

Gotion to supply VW with batteries outside of China
The Chinese battery cell manufacturer Gotion High-Tech will in future also supply Volkswagen with LFP cells outside China. The order, the size of which is not yet known, includes unit cells with LFP chemistry and the same specifications as in China. One possible model could be the ID.2.

Albemarle to expand lithium refining in Australia
The American speciality chemicals company Albemarle has announced a doubling of the production capacity of its Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant in Western Australia. Instead of 50,000 tonnes per year, the plant will be able to produce 100,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide at full capacity.

VW & Bosch are dropping their joint venture plans
