Volkswagen’s charging subsidiary Electrify America has agreed upon a deal with Hyundai to provide first-time owners of the Ioniq 6 EV with two years of complimentary charging sessions at Electrify America’s network of DC fast chargers.

The sessions are free for half an hour of charging and independent of the kWh charged. Hyundai Ioniq 6 owners can also locate and access charging stations on the road through the Electrify America mobile app.

The new deal continues a partnership between the Korean carmaking group and the Volkswagen business that came out of diesel-gate. Electrify America already supports charging the Kona Electric and the Ioniq 5, and now also includes Ioniq 6.

The fast charging stations in the Electrify America network can deliver up to 350 kW for vehicles capable of taking these charging powers. The Ioniq 6 can, at least on paper, and Hyundai gives a charge time from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes thanks to the car’s 800-Volt architecture. The EPA estimated driving range is 361 miles for the top trim model. The Limited AWD variant has a 270-mile range.

“The best-in-class and ultra-fast charging Ioniq 6 allows our customers to enjoy a fun EV driving experience,” said Olabisi Boyle, vice president of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai Motor North America. “The extended partnership with Electrify America continues to provide our customers convenient and complimentary access to the fastest charging, especially on long-distance trips.”

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 goes on sale in spring 2023 in the US and Canada.

Electrify America also offers an at-home charger called HomeStation for an additional cost. The Level 2 home charger delivers a 9.6 kW maximum charge speed, providing up to 33 miles of range per hour of charging.

Electrify America LLC is a wholly-owned Volkswagen subsidiary. Following the diesel fraud scandal, the carmaker was ordered to invest more than $2 billion in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure, education and access across the US. This “penalty” has resulted in one of the largest networks in America to date and delivers a continuous return on investment for VW. The company increased the prices across its 800-strong network this February.
