EU project searches for local battery raw material sources
A new EU project called METALLICO is looking into how battery metals such as lithium, cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel can be extracted in a sustainable way from primary and secondary raw material sources. The project includes 23 partners from nine countries.

Nottingham now home to one of UK’s largest V2G installations
Nottingham and Connected Energy have launched a large-scale vehicle-to-grid (V2G) demonstrator project. Installation of solar panels, battery storage and 40 bi-directional EV chargers complete the CleanMobilEnergy pilot at Nottingham City Council’s Eastcroft Depot.

2nd Life energy storage in California generates $1m turnover
Los Angeles-based B2U Storage Solutions is currently using 1,300 retired battery packs from old Honda & Nissan electric vehicles at its solar and energy storage facility in Lancaster, California. Now the storage facility has reached an energy content of 25 MWh.

Toyota & Jera to install major 2nd Life energy system in Japan
Toyota, in collaboration with Japanese utility Jera, has commissioned a large-volume energy storage system based on end-of-life batteries from electrified vehicles. The storage system uses retired batteries from hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-only and fuel cell cars.

Mercedes-Benz Energy announces second life project in Canada
Mercedes-Benz Energy has signed a supply agreement with Canadian startup Moment Energy to give batteries from e-cars a second life in stationary applications. It is Mercedes-Benz Energy’s first agreement with a North American supplier of second-life energy storage systems.

Betteries AMPS completes certification of 2nd life battery
Betteries AMPS has completed the certification (CE, UN and IEC) of its second life battery with 48 V and 2.3 kWh, which is based on upcycled modules from electric vehicle batteries. This allows the Berlin-based start-up to offer the mobile battery to its customers.

BMW to establish closed recycling loop for batteries
The BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture has just established a closed cycle recycling operation in China for the reuse of the raw materials nickel, lithium and cobalt from high-voltage batteries. Compared to the use of newly mined material, CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 70 per cent.

Nissan & Enel build second-life storage in Melilla
In Spanish city of Melilla in North Africa, Nissan has teamed up with energy company Enel for a project on the second-life use of electric car batteries. Old batteries from Nissan electric cars have been integrated into a stationary storage system to improve grid stability.
