US DoE invests in lithium battery recycling programmes

Fortum Battery Recycling and AMG Lithium have signed a preliminary contract and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the recycling of lithium salts. The common goal is to process lithium salts in Germany into battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

Ford is procuring lithium on a large scale for the batteries for its electric cars. The carmaker now signed agreements with five companies. Depending on the supplier, the first battery-grade materials will be delivered to the carmaker between 2025 and 2026.

Tesla kicks off lithium refinery construction in Texas
Tesla has officially begun construction of its own lithium refinery in Texas and plans to complete it next year. By 2025, Tesla plans to produce enough battery-grade lithium hydroxide for one million electric cars at the site near Corpus Christi.

German research team looks into remanufacturing e-bike drives
Together with partners, a team of researchers from the Fraunhofer IPA was able to show in a study that e-bike motors can be remanufactured in the sense of a modern circular economy. Fortum opens large-scale battery recycling plant in Finland
Fortum has completed its lithium-ion battery recycling factory in Harjavalta, Finland, on time. Announced in 2021, Fortum says this is the largest recycling plant in Europe in terms of capacity and also the first commercial-scale facility for hydrometallurgical recycling.

German recycling project looks at battery electrolytes
In Germany, battery industry players and university researchers are partnering on a joint project to improve the ecological footprint of lithium-ion batteries. The project, called SWELL, is led by battery electrolyte company Elyte Innovations, and joined by a team at the Technical University Dresden and the automotive lubricants company, Fuchs Smierstoffe.

US: Ascend Elements opens battery recycling plant in Georgia
The US American company Ascend Elements has opened its commercial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility in the US state of Georgia. The company invested $50 million in the site and says it is “North America’s largest electric vehicle battery recycling facility” to date.

EU Commission presents strategy to secure critical raw materials
The EU Commission is aiming for ten per cent of the EU’s demand for critical raw materials to be met from its own mining operations in 2030, 40 per cent from local processing and 15 per cent from EU recycling capacities. This was outlined in the newly presented ‘Critical Raw Materials Act’.

Koura signs supply deal with Ascend Elements
Ascend Elements will supply Koura with up to 5,000 tonnes of recycled lithium carbonate per year. Koura will use the recycled lithium carbonate in lithium-ion battery materials for the US and European markets, including lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), a key electrolyte salt.
